Try it on your own CSV
Drop a .twbx or .twb. This page lists its dashboards, sheets, data sources and every calculated field with its formula, and lets you save the files packaged inside. It runs in this browser; the file is not uploaded.
No file loaded yet. You can also drop a workbook on this box.
Where Tableau Desktop is the better choice today
- Broad live enterprise connectors. Native Tableau-supplied drivers for enterprise databases and cloud warehouses (including SQL Server, Oracle, Snowflake, Databricks, and Salesforce) with enterprise authentication.
- Server-side extract refresh and row-level security (RLS). Scheduled refreshes through Tableau Bridge, centralized user permissions, and certified data sources across hundreds of viewers.
- Print-layout dashboards and legacy extensions. Pixel-perfect multi-device dashboard layouts, custom
.tmsmap layers, and Tableau Dashboard Extensions API plugins.
Where xmetric fits
- Opening client or teammate
.twbxfiles immediately. Open the workbook in the app, or use the inspector to list data sources, sheets, calculated fields, and formulas and save the packaged data, on Mac, Windows, or Linux. - Exploring local files privately. CSV, Excel, and Parquet files load in the browser; nothing is uploaded unless you save online.
- Writing real LODs and table calculations for free. Keep the
{ FIXED ... }andWINDOW_*mental model you already know. - Automating BI with coding agents. Every interaction in the app maps to a command. An MCP server, ChatGPT app, and Claude connector are coming so agents can inspect and build views. All product and company names are trademarks of their respective holders; use of them does not imply affiliation or endorsement.
How to open a workbook or dataset without installing Tableau Desktop
You do not need a desktop installer or a paid Creator license to open a packaged workbook, run Tableau calculations, or build a view with shelves and marks.
- Open your file in the browser. Open a
.twbx,.twb,.csv,.xlsx, or.parquetfile from your computer in the xmetric app (/app/). Packaged data files inside.twbxarchives unpack locally in browser memory. - Place dimensions and measures on shelves. Drag fields to Columns, Rows, and the Marks card (Color, Size, Label, Detail, Tooltip), or pick a chart type from Show Me.
- Write calculated fields. Create calculated fields, Level of Detail expressions (
FIXED,INCLUDE,EXCLUDE), and table calculations (RUNNING_SUM,WINDOW_AVG,INDEX,RANK). To test a formula on its own and see the equivalent SQL, use the formula playground (/play/). - Filter, save, and share. Drag fields to Filters, then sign in to save the workbook online and share a view-only link. Your data stays local unless you choose to save.
Formula compatibility: Tableau calculations and SQL equivalents
Analysts switching tools usually hit a wall when they need cohort dates, percent-of-total across panes, or nested aggregations. xmetric uses Tableau's calculation syntax directly. Here is each formula with its equivalent SQL.
Customer acquisition cohort (FIXED LOD)
Tableau calculation syntax in xmetric:
{ FIXED [Customer ID] : MIN([Order Date]) }Equivalent SQL query:
SELECT
customer_id,
order_date,
MIN(order_date) OVER (PARTITION BY customer_id) AS first_order_date
FROM orders;Share of category revenue (EXCLUDE LOD)
Tableau calculation syntax in xmetric:
SUM([Sales]) / SUM({ EXCLUDE [Sub-Category] : SUM([Sales]) })Equivalent SQL query:
SELECT
category,
sub_category,
SUM(sales) / SUM(SUM(sales)) OVER (PARTITION BY category) AS category_share
FROM orders
GROUP BY category, sub_category;Running total down a table (Table Calculation)
Tableau calculation syntax in xmetric:
RUNNING_SUM(SUM([Sales]))Equivalent SQL query:
SELECT
order_month,
SUM(sales) AS monthly_sales,
SUM(SUM(sales)) OVER (ORDER BY order_month ROWS BETWEEN UNBOUNDED PRECEDING AND CURRENT ROW) AS running_sales
FROM orders
GROUP BY order_month;Current scope and limits
- Works today in the browser: The xmetric app opens
.twbxand.twbworkbooks and imports CSV, Excel, and Parquet files, with shelves, Show Me charts, calculated fields, LODs, and table calcs. Not every dashboard will look identical to Tableau. The free workbook inspector (/inspect/) also reads.pbixand.pbipfiles. - Live cloud databases: Direct connections to Postgres and BigQuery are coming. If your workbook connects to a live enterprise warehouse without a packaged extract, export a
.twbxextract or CSV file first. - Agent control: Every shelf, mark, and filter action in the xmetric app is a command. An MCP server, a ChatGPT app, and a Claude connector are in development.

Questions people ask
Can I open a `.twbx` file in xmetric without a Tableau license?
Yes. Open the .twbx or .twb file in the xmetric app to build on it, or drop it into the workbook inspector to list its data sources, sheets, dashboards, and calculated field formulas and save the packaged data. Not every dashboard will look identical to Tableau. Tableau also offers free Tableau Reader and Tableau Desktop Free Edition on Windows and Mac for opening local workbooks.
Does xmetric upload my CSV or `.twbx` file to a server?
No. Files are read and charted inside your browser session. Nothing leaves your machine unless you sign in and save a workbook online.
How much does Tableau Desktop cost in 2026?
Tableau offers Tableau Desktop Free Edition for one user working locally (it cannot connect to Tableau Cloud/Server, publish online, or share packaged workbooks with others). Full publishing and sharing require a Tableau Creator subscription: $75 per user/month, billed annually for Standard Edition, or $115 per user/month, billed annually for Enterprise Edition.
Do `FIXED`, `INCLUDE`, and `EXCLUDE` LOD expressions work in xmetric?
Yes. xmetric supports Tableau's Level of Detail syntax (FIXED, INCLUDE, EXCLUDE), regular aggregates, and table calculations, and follows the standard filter order of operations (context filters before FIXED LODs, dimension filters before INCLUDE/EXCLUDE).
Drop a workbook above to see what's inside, then open it in the xmetric app to keep building.
