Try it on your own CSV
Drop a CSV here. xmetric reads every row in this browser and draws a first chart you can regroup or change the measure of. Nothing is uploaded.
No file loaded yet. You can also drop a CSV on this box.
Where Lightdash is the better choice today
- Version-controlled semantic layer in git (with or without dbt): All metric and dimension definitions live in dbt YAML or Lightdash YAML files, with
lightdash previewspinning up temporary preview projects on pull requests. - Unlimited viewer seats on a flat company plan: Lightdash Cloud Pro ($3000 / month, unlimited users, no per-seat pricing) includes unlimited users with no per-seat fees, making costs predictable for large organizations sharing governed metrics.
- Live cloud warehouse queries today: Lightdash queries BigQuery, Snowflake, Databricks, Redshift, ClickHouse, Trino, and Postgres live right now, whereas live Postgres and BigQuery connections in xmetric are coming.
Where xmetric fits
- Instant browser analysis: Drop CSV, Excel, or Parquet files into the xmetric app and build views on shelves with zero YAML configuration.
- Opening
.twbx,.twb,.pbix, and.pbipfiles: Open Tableau workbooks in the app, or use the workbook inspector to list their calculated fields and LOD formulas and save their packaged data files so you can port them to SQL. - Fast local metric prototyping: Test
FIXED,INCLUDE, andEXCLUDEcohort and retention logic in the formula playground before writing permanent warehouse models.
Why Lightdash requires a warehouse and YAML pipeline before you can explore a file
Lightdash is built as a governed semantic exploration layer where tables, dimensions, and metrics are defined in dbt YAML (schema.yml) or standalone Lightdash YAML files (dbt is optional) over a connected SQL data warehouse (BigQuery, Postgres, Supabase, Redshift, Snowflake, Databricks, Trino, ClickHouse, DuckDB, or Athena).
When a founder, finance lead, or analyst receives a raw CSV export from Stripe or a .twbx workbook from a consultant, loading that file into a warehouse and writing YAML definitions just to check a few metrics takes extra setup.
In xmetric, you work with files and formulas directly in your browser:
- Drop a
.csv,.xlsx,.parquet, or.twbxfile into the xmetric app and drag dimensions and measures onto Rows, Columns, Color, and Detail shelves. - Drop a
.twbxor.twbfile into the workbook inspector to list every data source, sheet, dashboard, and calculated field, and save the packaged data files from a.twbx. - Test ad-hoc Level of Detail (
FIXED,INCLUDE,EXCLUDE) or table calculation formulas in the formula playground without opening a git pull request.
Prototyping metrics in xmetric before committing them to dbt or Lightdash SQL
Even if your company uses Lightdash in production, xmetric is a quick scratchpad for prototyping new metric logic on a file before translating it into a dbt model or Lightdash YAML metric.
Prototype in xmetric (Repeat Customer Revenue Share via FIXED LOD):
SUM(IF { FIXED [Customer ID] : COUNTD([Order ID]) } > 1 THEN [Revenue] ELSE 0 END)
/ SUM([Revenue])Equivalent SQL to commit to your dbt model (models/marts/fct_customer_orders.sql):
WITH customer_order_counts AS (
SELECT
customer_id,
COUNT(DISTINCT order_id) AS lifetime_orders
FROM {{ ref('stg_orders') }}
GROUP BY customer_id
)
SELECT
o.order_id,
o.customer_id,
o.order_date,
o.revenue,
CASE WHEN c.lifetime_orders > 1 THEN o.revenue ELSE 0 END AS repeat_customer_revenue
FROM {{ ref('stg_orders') }} o
JOIN customer_order_counts c ON o.customer_id = c.customer_idSpec comparison: xmetric vs Lightdash

Questions people ask
Can I use xmetric if our team does not use dbt or YAML?
Yes. xmetric requires no dbt project, no YAML files, and no data warehouse. Drop CSV, Excel, Parquet, or .twbx files into the app and build charts on shelves in your browser. Note that Lightdash also makes dbt optional via standalone Lightdash YAML, though it still requires a project and warehouse setup.
How can xmetric help with a Tableau-to-Lightdash migration?
Drop an existing .twbx or .twb workbook into xmetric's workbook inspector to list every data source, sheet, dashboard, and calculated field (including nested LOD expressions), test those formulas in the formula playground, then translate them into dbt or Lightdash YAML models.
Does xmetric upload my local files to a server?
No. Local files dropped into xmetric stay in your browser and are not uploaded unless you sign in and save a workbook online.
Open the xmetric app and drop a file to explore it without a warehouse.
