xmetric vs Metabase: Instant Browser File Analysis vs Database Dashboards

xmetric is free in your browser with no server setup: drop a CSV, Excel, Parquet or .twbx file into the app and build charts on Tableau-style shelves, with your data staying in the browser. Metabase is a database dashboard portal: you self-host a Docker/Java server or pay for Metabase Cloud, with Starter at $100/mo monthly or $90/mo billed yearly ($1,080/year); first 5 users included; +$6 per user/month ($65 per user/year) and Pro at $575/mo monthly or $517.50/mo billed yearly ($6,210/year); first 10 users included; +$12 per user/month ($130 per user/year) (as of October 2026).

How to analyze a CSV or workbook file without setting up a database

Metabase is architected to sit on top of a relational database or warehouse (PostgreSQL, MySQL, Snowflake, Redshift, or ClickHouse Cloud) where an administrator enables a writable database connection and schema for CSV uploads (or Metabase Cloud Storage on Cloud plans), creating a database table and model for each uploaded CSV. It does not accept .parquet or .twbx file uploads.

If you have a CSV export or a BI workbook and want answers immediately in the browser, xmetric removes the database infrastructure step:

  1. Open the xmetric app in any desktop browser tab.
  2. Drop a .csv, .xlsx, .parquet, or .twbx file and slice dimensions and measures across Rows, Columns, Color, and Detail shelves, locally in your browser.
  3. To audit a workbook, drop a .twbx, .twb, .pbix, or .pbip file into the workbook inspector to list data sources, sheets, dashboards, and formulas (and save packaged data files).

Calculation depth: multi-level LOD expressions vs Metabase custom expressions

Metabase's visual Query Builder supports spreadsheet-like custom expressions (Sum, Share, CountIf, SumIf, CumulativeSum, case, contains, between), but when a metric requires comparing a row's value against a nested subgroup total at a different grain, Metabase users must switch from the visual Query Builder to a native SQL query.

In xmetric, you write Level of Detail (FIXED, INCLUDE, EXCLUDE) expressions and table calculations as calculated fields and use them on shelves. You can test them in the formula playground.

Customer Order Size vs Customer's Historical Average (xmetric LOD syntax):

[Order Amount] - { FIXED [Customer ID] : AVG([Order Amount]) }

Standard SQL equivalent (what you write in a Metabase Native SQL question):

SELECT
  order_id,
  customer_id,
  order_amount,
  order_amount - AVG(order_amount) OVER (PARTITION BY customer_id) AS diff_from_customer_avg
FROM orders;

Cohort Retention Month Index (xmetric LOD syntax):

DATEDIFF('month', { FIXED [Customer ID] : MIN([Order Date]) }, [Order Date])

Standard SQL equivalent:

SELECT
  customer_id,
  order_date,
  DATE_DIFF('month', MIN(order_date) OVER (PARTITION BY customer_id), order_date) AS months_since_first_order
FROM orders;

Metabase hosting and per-seat pricing vs browser execution

Self-hosted Metabase is free in license fees, but you must provision and maintain a Java JAR or Docker container and connect a SQL database. Managed Metabase Cloud Starter costs $100/mo monthly or $90/mo billed yearly ($1,080/year); first 5 users included; +$6 per user/month ($65 per user/year). Metabase Pro costs $575/mo monthly or $517.50/mo billed yearly ($6,210/year); first 10 users included; +$12 per user/month ($130 per user/year) for 10 users, with additional users charged per seat. Enterprise is Custom pricing; starts at $20,000/year.

xmetric runs inside the user's browser tab for free, with no server to host or patch.

Questions people ask

Do I need Docker or a database to run xmetric?

No. xmetric runs directly in your web browser. Drop CSV, Excel, Parquet, or .twbx files into the app and build charts on shelves without installing Docker, Java, or Postgres.

Can xmetric connect to our Postgres database like Metabase?

Not yet. Today xmetric works with files you drop into the browser: CSV, Excel, Parquet, and Tableau workbooks. Live connections to Postgres and BigQuery are coming.

Why use xmetric alongside Metabase?

Teams use Metabase for recurring dashboards over their production database, and use xmetric when an analyst or founder needs to inspect a client's .twbx or .pbix file, prototype a cohort LOD formula before writing it as SQL in Metabase, or check an ad-hoc CSV export without creating temporary tables in the production database.

Open the xmetric app and drop a file to build a view with no server.
