Open a .twbx here and see what xmetric reads
Drop a .twbx or .twb. This page lists its dashboards, sheets, data sources and every calculated field with its formula, and lets you save the files packaged inside. It runs in this browser; the file is not uploaded.
No file loaded yet. You can also drop a workbook on this box.
Where Tableau beats xmetric today
- Publishing for a whole company. Tableau Cloud and Tableau Server publish dashboards to an organization with permissions, schedules and alerts. xmetric shares a workbook as a view-only link from a free account.
- Sharing and permissions. Tableau Cloud and Tableau Server publish to a team, with subscriptions and data-driven alerts. xmetric has no publishing yet.
- A free desktop app for one person. Tableau Desktop Free Edition: full Desktop analytics for one person, stored locally; no publishing, online sharing or sharing packaged workbooks. source
- Live databases. Tableau connects to live databases. xmetric reads files today; Postgres and BigQuery are planned.
- AI agents, today. Tableau Cloud editions include Tableau MCP for AI agents. It reads and writes: its tools include publishing and uploading workbooks and scaffolding data apps, plus workbook commands for Tableau Desktop. source xmetric's MCP server is in development.
Where xmetric wins
- Nothing to install, any computer. It runs in the browser on Mac, Windows, Linux and Chromebooks. Tableau Desktop and Tableau Reader run on Windows and Mac.
- Your file stays put. xmetric reads the workbook in the page. It isn't uploaded, and there's no account.
- Every formula on one screen. Drop a .twbx and get every calculated field with its formula, the sheets and dashboards it feeds, and the data files packaged inside, ready to save.
- Free, no seats. The tools on getxmetric.com cost nothing and need no license count.
- Calculations as SQL. Every Tableau function has SQL that returns the same numbers, tested on sample rows in DuckDB.
Which one fits your situation
- Someone sent you a .twbx and you only need to look inside: xmetric, in this page, on any computer. To click through the dashboards as built, install Tableau Reader (Windows or Mac).
- You build dashboards for one person, on Windows or Mac: Tableau Desktop Free Edition.
- A team needs shared, governed dashboards today: Tableau Cloud or Tableau Server.
- You're moving Tableau logic to a warehouse or dbt: xmetric's function reference gives the SQL for each calculation, and the opener above lists every formula to move.
What Tableau's paid seats cost
Tableau sells seats by role. Every deployment needs at least one Creator, on an annual contract source. Standard edition: Creator $75 per user/month, billed annually, Explorer $42 per user/month, billed annually, Viewer $15 per user/month, billed annually. Enterprise edition: Creator $115 per user/month, billed annually.
Questions people ask
Is Tableau free?
Partly. Tableau Desktop Free Edition, Tableau Public and Tableau Reader are free. The catch: Free Edition can't publish, share online, or share packaged workbooks with others. Anything on Tableau Public is public.
Can xmetric open my .twbx file?
Yes. Open it in xmetric and its dashboards and sheets work in the browser, filters included. The box above lists what's inside: every calculated field with its formula and the packaged files. The file isn't uploaded.
Does xmetric upload my data?
No. Files you open on getxmetric.com are read by code running in your browser tab.
Does xmetric understand Tableau calculations?
Yes, including FIXED, INCLUDE and EXCLUDE level-of-detail expressions and table calculations. Each reference page runs a sample through the calculation and through SQL and shows the same numbers from both.
Have a .twbx? Open it above. Stuck on a formula? See why a FIXED LOD ignores your filter.
