Try it on your own CSV
Drop a .twbx or .twb. This page lists its dashboards, sheets, data sources and every calculated field with its formula, and lets you save the files packaged inside. It runs in this browser; the file is not uploaded.
No file loaded yet. You can also drop a workbook on this box.
What is inside a .twb XML file
Unlike a .twbx packaged workbook (which is a zip archive that bundles the workbook with supporting local file data and background images), a .twb file holds worksheets, dashboards, and stories without bundling the local data files. It is an XML blueprint that defines:
<datasources>: Database connection metadata, table joins, column data types, parameters, and every<calculation>formula.<worksheets>: Which fields sit on the Rows, Columns, Color, Size, and Filter shelves for each sheet.<dashboards>: Layout zones, filter actions, and parameter controls.
Because Tableau generates internal field identifiers like [Calculation_4829104819201948] inside the XML and substitutes them inside downstream formulas, reading a .twb file in VS Code or Notepad quickly turns into a scavenger hunt.
How to open a .twb file and resolve every formula in your browser
When you drop a .twb or .twbx file into xmetric's workbook inspector, it resolves internal calculation IDs back into human-readable field names so you can audit the workbook in seconds:
- Drop your
.twb(or.twbx) file into the workbook inspector box above. - View the complete list of data sources, sheets, dashboards, calculated fields with their resolved formulas, dependencies, and any broken, unused, or duplicate calculations, or export the result as JSON.
- Paste any calculated field into the formula playground to run it on sample data in the browser.
- Open the workbook in the xmetric app to work with its sheets on shelves (not every dashboard will look identical to Tableau).
Example: how raw .twb XML compares to resolved formulas
In raw .twb XML, a nested profit margin calculation looks like this:
<column caption='Net Margin %' datatype='real' name='[Calculation_918273645]' role='measure' type='quantitative'>
<calculation class='tableau' formula='SUM([Calculation_102938475]) / ZN(SUM([Sales]))' />
</column>When opened in xmetric's workbook inspector, the reference to [Calculation_102938475] is resolved automatically into its readable Tableau formula:
// Resolved Tableau Formula: Net Margin %
SUM([Gross Profit] - [Shipping Cost]) / ZN(SUM([Sales]))Equivalent SQL expression:
SUM(gross_profit - shipping_cost) / NULLIF( COALESCE(SUM(sales), 0), 0 ) AS net_margin_pctExtracting formulas from a .twb file with Python
If you want to batch-audit dozens of .twb files in a git repository, you can parse the XML tree with Python's built-in xml.etree.ElementTree module:
import xml.etree.ElementTree as ET
tree = ET.parse("finance_dashboard.twb")
root = tree.getroot()
name_map = {}
for col in root.findall(".//datasource/column"):
internal_name = col.attrib.get("name")
caption = col.attrib.get("caption", internal_name)
if internal_name:
name_map[internal_name] = f"[{caption}]"
for col in root.findall(".//datasource/column[calculation]"):
caption = col.attrib.get("caption") or col.attrib.get("name")
formula = col.find("calculation").attrib.get("formula", "")
for raw_id, readable in name_map.items():
formula = formula.replace(raw_id, readable)
if formula:
print(f"{caption}: {formula}")Limits when opening a standalone .twb file
Because a .twb file only stores metadata, opening a .twb by itself shows you the workbook structure, data sources, sheets, and formulas, not the data rows. If you also need the data:
- If you have the
.twbxpackaged version, drop it into the workbook inspector to save the packaged data files, or open it in the xmetric app. - If the data lives in a CSV, Excel or Parquet file, import it in the xmetric app. Live connections to Postgres and BigQuery are coming.
Questions people ask
Why does Tableau Reader fail to open a .twb file?
Tableau Reader only opens packaged workbooks (.twbx) with extracted data sources that were created in Tableau Desktop. To open and inspect a .twb file without installing Tableau Desktop (Tableau Creator Standard is $75 per user/month, billed annually as of October 2026, alongside the local-only Tableau Desktop Free Edition and Public Edition on Windows and Mac), drop the .twb file into xmetric's workbook inspector in your browser.
Where are parameters stored inside a .twb XML file?
Tableau stores parameters inside a dedicated <datasource name='Parameters'> block near the top of the .twb XML file. Each parameter appears as a <column> element with its current value, data type, and allowable domain list or range.
Can an AI coding agent read my .twb file?
Raw .twb files often exceed 20,000 lines of XML and burn through an LLM's context window with formatting tags. xmetric's workbook inspector parses .twb and .twbx files in your browser and exports clean JSON with all data sources, calculated fields, formulas, and dependencies. An xmetric MCP server for agents is coming (Tableau Cloud also includes Tableau MCP in its cloud editions).
