Use a local file board with ChatGPT.
The public xmetric MCP endpoint is live for custom no-auth connections. Host rendering and tool selection remain unverified; the browser example below runs without a chat connection.

Which team brings in more revenue?
A synthetic services business has four invoices split between Sales and Services. Read the aggregate; no chat connection is used by this example.

How does this workflow work?
What is the direct answer to this workbook question?
The public xmetric MCP endpoint is live at https://getxmetric.com/mcp; use it as a no-auth custom connection where your chat host supports one. The server passed its production protocol check, while real ChatGPT and Claude panel behavior and directory listings remain unverified. The original file stays in the browser board; supported metadata and requested results are shared with xmetric and the chat host.
Why use a local board for interactive dashboards?
A local xmetric board lets you keep the original file in your browser and continue exploring a view. Attaching a file directly to a chat is a separate upload to that host. See the AI app data flow before choosing a confidential file.
When connected, supported metadata and requested results are shared with xmetric and the host. Real ChatGPT and Claude panel behavior remains unverified.
How do I connect to the public xmetric MCP endpoint?
Add https://getxmetric.com/mcp as a custom connection with no authentication, where your host supports custom connections. The 2026-10-28 protocol receipt records successful MCP initialize, tool discovery and widget-resource checks on release 5ccce8d9; it does not verify real ChatGPT or Claude operation.
- Name the custom connection xmetric and use the public endpoint. This local-file flow needs no xmetric account or API key.
- Ask to open a local report. If an xmetric board appears, choose the file inside that board; it does not automatically read chat attachments.
- Ask about a field or authored measure and read a completed result with its SQL or DAX evidence. A pending request or text-only response does not prove the board ran.
Follow the connection guide for setup and limits. Real-host rendering and tool selection remain unverified; directory review is separate.
Which capabilities work today, and which checks remain?
The public MCP server has passed protocol checks. Real-host operation and directory listings remain unverified.
| Capability | Status (as of October 2026) | Details |
|---|---|---|
| xmetric app: shelves, marks, Show Me charts | Works today | Drag fields onto shelves, build and pivot charts, write calculated fields, LOD expressions and table calcs. |
Local CSV, Excel and Parquet files, .twbx/.twb workbooks | Works today | Files open in the browser; nothing is uploaded unless you sign in and save online. |
| Save online and share a view-only link | Works today | Sign in, save a workbook, reopen it later, and share a view-only link. |
| Workbook inspector and formula playground | Works today | List a workbook's sheets, data sources and calculated fields, save packaged data files, and run LODs and table calcs on sample data. The inspector also reads .pbix and zipped .pbip files. |
| Calculation-error tools | Works today | Reproduce a Tableau calculation error and test a fix on sample rows or your own CSV. |
| Public xmetric MCP endpoint | Live; protocol checked | Anonymous initialize, tool discovery and widget-resource checks passed. Dated protocol receipt. |
| Real ChatGPT and Claude operation; directory listings | Unverified | No claim of real-host rendering, tool selection or directory approval. See setup and evidence limits. |
| Live Postgres and BigQuery connections | Coming | Direct warehouse connections alongside local file analysis. |
How can I test a ChatGPT-written LOD calculation?
Suppose you want a calculation showing each sales rep's share of their region's total revenue. Instead of a one-off Python script, ask ChatGPT for a single FIXED Level of Detail expression and test it in the xmetric formula playground (/play/):
// Share of Regional Revenue in xmetric
SUM([Deal Amount]) / SUM({ FIXED [Region] : SUM([Deal Amount]) })-- Equivalent SQL
SELECT
region,
sales_rep,
SUM(deal_amount) AS rep_revenue,
SUM(deal_amount) / SUM(SUM(deal_amount)) OVER (PARTITION BY region) AS share_of_region
FROM deals
GROUP BY region, sales_rep;In the xmetric app, the calculation is bound to the view rather than baked into a static image, so dragging Quarter onto the Filters shelf updates every bar in your browser.
When should I use ChatGPT's built-in Data Analysis?
Use the chat host’s data-analysis tools when you need its code environment and are comfortable sharing the file with that host.
- Custom Python. Choose ChatGPT's built-in Data Analysis (available on ChatGPT subscription plans) if your file is safe to upload to the cloud and you need custom Python packages for statistical hypothesis testing, sentiment scoring, or file format conversions.
When does xmetric fit my workflow?
Use xmetric for browser-based file exploration and interactive views. In the AI file-app flow, the original file stays local while metadata and requested results are shared.
- Files that must stay local. Your CSV, Excel, Parquet or
.twbxfiles stay inside your browser unless you choose to save online. - Interactive charts without re-prompting. Build and change views on shelves, with Level of Detail expressions and table calculations, for free.
Is the xmetric ChatGPT app available today?
The public xmetric MCP endpoint is live at https://getxmetric.com/mcp for hosts that support custom no-auth connections. Its production protocol check passed on 2026-10-28, release 5ccce8d9. Real ChatGPT and Claude panel behavior, tool selection and directory listings remain unverified. See the connection guide and dated protocol receipt.
Does xmetric require an account or paid subscription?
No. The xmetric app, workbook inspector, formula playground, and calculation-error tools are free. You only sign in if you want to save a workbook online and share a view-only link.
How does xmetric keep my data private?
The original file stays in the browser board. Choosing a file shares supported field names, types and calculation definitions, followed by requested result cells and SQL or DAX evidence, with xmetric and the chat host. Labels, filters and small aggregates may be sensitive. A chat attachment is a separate upload; online saving and support uploads are separate actions. Read the AI app privacy policy.

What data does this worked example use?
The initial view uses authored synthetic data, not customer data or a captured agent session.
The example record lists its file, calculation or SQL and expected values. The live browser result is computed by xmetric’s existing engine or workbook inspector. Samples are excluded from own-data activation reporting.
