How does this workflow work?

What is the direct answer to this workbook question?

The public xmetric MCP server is live at https://getxmetric.com/mcp with no authentication or API key. Anonymous initialize, tool discovery and widget-resource checks passed on 2026-10-29. ChatGPT and Claude host rendering and tool selection remain unverified; their directory listings remain coming. The local-file board shares supported metadata and requested aggregate answers while the original file stays in the browser.

What does the live server do today?

The public xmetric MCP server is live at https://getxmetric.com/mcp with no authentication or API key. Anonymous initialize, tool discovery and widget-resource checks passed on 2026-10-29. ChatGPT and Claude host rendering and tool selection remain unverified; their directory listings remain coming. See the dated public protocol receipt and setup and evidence limits.

The file board parses supported .pbix, .twbx/.twb, CSV, Excel and Parquet files in your browser. Choosing a file shares supported schema, source names and calculation definitions with xmetric and the chat host; requested result cells, filters and SQL or DAX evidence are shared when answering. The original file is not uploaded by this flow. Small aggregates and labels can still be sensitive.

What works today, and what remains planned?

The public server is available; host operation and directory approval are separate checks.

How is the remote MCP connection configured?

Use https://getxmetric.com/mcp as a remote HTTPS connection with no authentication, where the host offers custom connections. This is not a local stdio package or a claude_desktop_config.json command.

If an xmetric board appears, choose the local file inside that board, then ask about its supported fields or measures. The board does not automatically read chat attachments or files from a terminal path. A text-only response does not prove that the board opened or a query completed. Real Claude Desktop operation remains unverified. See the connection guide.

Which tools does the live MCP server expose?

The live public catalog exposes xmetric.open, xmetric.schema, xmetric.query and xmetric.result for the local-file board. Read a completed result and its SQL or DAX evidence; a pending request is not an answer.

Registered local workbooks also have xmetric.place_field, xmetric.save_worksheet, xmetric.rename_worksheet, xmetric.create_worksheet, xmetric.set_workbook_properties and xmetric.worksheet_query. These are specific, bounded operations; the catalog does not expose the previously planned inspect_workbook, explain_calculation or audit_unused_fields tools.

How can I check a Tableau LOD formula in the browser?

When you ask Claude to verify a metric like customer cohort retention, you can test the formula in the xmetric formula playground (/play/) and compare it with the equivalent SQL:

// Tableau / xmetric LOD formula
{ FIXED [Customer ID] : MIN([Order Date]) }
-- Equivalent SQL
SELECT
  customer_id,
  MIN(order_date) OVER (PARTITION BY customer_id) AS first_order_date
FROM orders;

When are Tableau Cloud or Tableau Desktop a better fit?

Choose the native Tableau tools when you need Tableau governance, published cloud content or the native local authoring workflow.

  • Tableau MCP and governance now. Choose Tableau Cloud and Tableau Desktop (Creator $75 per user/month, billed annually, as of October 2026) if you need Tableau MCP on published cloud data sources, scheduled extract refreshes, or enterprise governance.
  • A free local Tableau. Tableau Desktop also offers a free one-person local edition that cannot publish or share.

When should I use xmetric?

Use the browser app to open a local report directly. Use the public MCP server for supported file-board tools, subject to the host rendering the board.

Read the AI app privacy policy.

Will Claude Desktop see all the rows in my CSV or .twbx extract?

The file board parses supported .pbix, .twbx/.twb, CSV, Excel and Parquet files in your browser. Do I need a paid Tableau license to inspect a .twbx file?

No. Tableau offers Tableau Reader (free on Windows and Mac for viewing .twbx files) and Tableau Desktop Free Edition (for one-person local use), and the xmetric workbook inspector lists .twbx and .twb data sources, sheets, and formulas in your browser for free.

Can I use xmetric on macOS, Windows, and Linux?

Yes. Because xmetric runs in the browser, it works on any modern desktop operating system without installing anything.

What data does this worked example use?

The initial view uses authored synthetic data, not customer data or a captured agent session.

The example record lists its file, calculation or SQL and expected values. The live browser result is computed by xmetric’s existing engine or workbook inspector. Samples are excluded from own-data activation reporting.
